Sunday, January 30, 2022 – The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

What hard things have you learned about following Jesus? How do these readings shape or transform the way we embody love? How does God prepare us for love?

These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany. The word “epiphany” means “revelation” or “manifestation.” The scripture readings for this Season after Epiphany focus on how God is being revealed in the world.

•        From the Epistles: First Corinthians 13:1-13 (The greatest of these is love)

Paul’s First Letter to the Church at Corinth addresses some divisions facing the early church. In this passage, Paul responds to news that people had been arguing about whose gifts were more important.

The first half of the reading (v. 1 to 8) is often read at wedding services, but the love of which the apostle Paul writes is not romantic love, but “agape” – altruistic, self-giving love.

Before reading the second section, we need to remember that mirrors of that time were merely polished bits of metal or obsidian, not our high-quality silvered glass.

•        From the Gospels: Luke 4:21-30 (Jesus in Nazareth)

Today’s Gospel Lesson takes place after the baptism of Jesus. After forty days in the wilderness, facing temptations, Jesus begins his ministry by reading scripture in his home town of Nazareth. In his interpretation of the reading, he refers to stories about the 9th Century BC Hebrew prophets Elijah (First Kings 17 to Second Kings 2) and Elisha (First Kings 19 to Second Kings 13).

All of the readings this week call us to trust God and practice God’s ways, come what may.

SPIRIT WEST PRAYER CHAIN
Prayer is important. We know that  people still face challenges and difficulties not related to Covid-19, and we cannot forget them.  Our Prayer Chain continues to be active.  If you have a prayer request, please send it to spiritwest.prayerchain@gmail.com.  These requests will be shared regularly with the prayer chain and may form part of the Prayers of the People in our Sunday Worship.
Please remember to have people removed from the prayer chain if the prayers are no longer needed.
