This Sunday I’m am reverting back to Canada Day. Our nation’s motto ‘From Sea to Sea” (a mari usque as mare) comes from Psalm 72:8. The whole psalm is a vision of a nation that is ruled in care and justice for all its people, particularly the poor and disadvantaged. Our national ancestors could not have been oblivious to what goes before and after the verse chosen as the motto. Were they trying to outline a vision for this brand new nation that had just been created . How do we as a nation today stand against that vision. It is also interesting to note that when the Order of Canada was created the motto chosen was “They desired a better country” which comes from Hebrews 11:16.
The readings for Sunday are Psalm 72:1-8 and Mark John 15:12-17. I am calling the Time for All Ages, “Our Shield” and the Sermon is “From Sea to Sea”
We will be celebrating Communion at this Service, and following the Service there will be a special luncheon (see next item)
I will be taking holidays in July. After this Sunday I will see you again on Aug 2.
Farewell to Fraser Hiltz – Sunday, July 5th
As some of you may know, Fraser Hiltz, long time member of Spirit West (Gilchrist..) has decided that he would like to live closer to his daughters in British Columbia. So he has sold his condo, bought a place on the coast and is leaving us in early July. We could not let him go without in some way marking the occasion, having the opportunity to thank him for all he has done for this congregation and to wish him God’s speed on his journey. Please join us for lunch following the Service on Sunday, July 5th. If you happen to have any good “Fraser stories” that you might share, so much the better.
Church Membership Program in September
I have heard from a few people who are interested. What I am thinking of is a program of four or five sessions that would be held immediately after the Sunday service in September/October. We would learn over lunch. If you are already a member of the United Church (or Presbyterian or similar), but your membership is with another congregation, your membership can be transferred by certificate. In other circumstances you become a member by profession of faith or confirmation. If you are interested, or just have questions, please give me a call.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Our Prayer Shawl Supply coordinator is Bonnie C. So now, what is needed is knitters/crocheters who will make the prayer shawls. Basic knitting skills are all that is required We have some wool, knitting needles and a basic pattern available. If you are interested contact me or Bonnie C. For those of you unfamiliar with Prayer Shawl Ministries, it is a program where hand knit shawls, are given to people in hospital with the prayers of our church. The shawl provides a tangible reminder of the church’s and God’s presence with the person in hospital.
