Sunday, April 3, 2022 – The Fifth Sunday in Lent

How is God’s love poured out? How are you willing to pour out the love of Christ through your life?

These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for the Fifth Sunday in the Season of Lent.

The Season of Lent is intended to be a time of solemn reflection, repentance and preparation building up to the celebration of resurrection on Easter morning. The season consists of the 40 days before Easter, excluding Sundays, which are meant to be rest stops (think “oasis”) in the wilderness. How will you prepare yourself for the celebration of Resurrection? How can you deepen your faith life this Lent?

•        From the Epistles: Philippians 3:8-14
The apostle Paul probably wrote the Letter to the Philippians from prison, almost 30 years after the Resurrection. After listing his topnotch credentials, he puts them into perspective. Seeing his own life re-created by God’s ways, he writes of making new priorities for the sake of what lies ahead.

•        From the Gospels: John 12:1-8
Our Gospel Lesson is set the day before the final entry into Jerusalem, just before the arrest and crucifixion. Jesus goes to the home of his friends, Lazarus, Martha and Mary, brother and sisters. Jesus has just raised Lazarus from the tomb, and the authorities are plotting against him.

Nard was an expensive perfume made from flowers grown in the Himalayan Mountains of south-east Asia. The silver coin or denarius (plural: denarii) referred to by Judas was a Roman coin worth about a day’s wage for a labourer.

In response to Judas, Jesus says, “The poor will always be with you.” While this may seem like a cynical and selfish response, it likely is a reference to Deuteronomy 15:10-11, which reads:

“Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbour in your land.’”

SPIRIT WEST PRAYER CHAIN
Prayer is important. We know that  people still face challenges and difficulties not related to Covid-19, and we cannot forget them.  Our Prayer Chain continues to be active.  If you have a prayer request, please send it to spiritwest.prayerchain@gmail.com.  These requests will be shared regularly with the prayer chain and may form part of the Prayers of the People in our Sunday Worship.
Please remember to have people removed from the prayer chain if the prayers are no longer needed.

YOUR BOTTLES FOR THE CHURCH
You may have bottles piling up for recycling.  You can bring them to the church (or you can call for pick up).  If you want to bring your bottles (and any other recyclable beverage containers) in during our office hours and put them directly in the Bottle Shed (by the garage), give us a call, and we can have the shed open for you.  All money raised from the return of bottles goes towards paying down the principal and interest on our mortgage.
