February 26, 2017 - Transfiguration Sunday

Greetings,
You will note below that this Sunday after Church is the Congregational Meeting.  My experience is that when a Congregation Meeting is announced people stay away.  At times I would like to just surprise you with such a Meeting,  but the rules of our Church require that you be given notice (or warning).  The church does not exist without people, no people no church.  This is true for Sunday worship as well as for meetings.  Please come out and be the church this Sunday.

This Sunday – February 26th
We have come to an end of a season of the Church year.  This Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday before the start of Lent. (Lent starts next Wednesday, March 1, Ash Wednesday)  The stories related in both of Sunday’s readings have to do with mountain top experiences.  We have Moses going up a mountain to meet God and receive the tablets of the Law.  Jesus goes up a mountain and in mystical radiance stands with Moses and Elijah before three confused and frightened followers.  Mountain top experiences in the Bible are very significant, they often mark a radical shift or change.  But, the true meaning of the experience comes only later at the bottom of the mountain.  Our lives are filled with “mountain top” experiences.  Moments of great change in our lives, that only truly become meaningful as we live out our lives in that change.  And the message from Scripture is that God is with us on the mountain top, but also with us at the bottom as well.

The Readings for Sunday are Exodus 24:12-18 and Matthew 17:1-9.  In the Time for All Ages, I will talk about “Selfies.”  I have called my sermon, “From the Mountain Top.”

SPIRIT WEST UNITED CHURCH CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
There will be a Congregational Meeting after Church this Sunday, February 26, 2017.  The purpose of this meeting is to receive and discuss the Annual Report, to discuss and approve a Business Plan for Spirit West United Church (a proposed Business Plan was sent out with the Annual Report last week), and to discuss and confirm (or not) the recommendations of the Church Board on General Council Remits 1 and 2 (see next item).

GENERAL COUNCIL REMITS
At the Church Board meeting last night, Remit 2- The Elimination of Transfer and Settlement from the General Council was discussed and voted on.  Remit 1- The Three Council model was dealt with at the January Board Meeting.  It is however, the desire of the Board to allow for the fuller engagement of the congregation in the Remit Process.  Therefore, Remits 1 and 2, along with the results of the vote by the Board will be presented at the Congregational Meeting on February 26 for discussion and confirmation.  Remits 3 and 4 will be dealt with by the Board in March and April and the results will presented to the Congregation at a later date.  Information about all the Remits can be found online at gc42.ca/remits.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED!!
Our schedule of Sunday School teachers has run out.  We need a volunteer, or volunteers who would be willing to teach Sunday School for the Sundays in Lent (March 5 – April 9)  We have a small but enthusiastic group of young folk in Sunday School, please consider this wonderful opportunity.  If you are interested call Margery W. 780-419-3224 or call the church office.

A reflection from Sunday School.  Last week Margery was teaching, and you may remember that part of the reading from the Gospel was the command to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)  In the Sunday School class they made a collage gluing magazine illustrations of all sorts of different people under the heading “Love all People.” (You can see the collage on Sunday)  In spite of the prevalence of pictures of Donald Trump in the magazines, the children showed great reluctance to use his picture in the collage.  After some more discussion about the Bible reading, the children were persuaded that his picture could be included.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
On Friday, March 3, at 2:00 pm, Spirit West will be hosting the World Day of Prayer Service for this area of Edmonton.  This service is part of an international day of prayer, spearheaded in Canada by the Women’s Interchurch Council.  The resources for the 2017 service have been prepared by women of the Philippines.

Greetings,
Please note the update to the information on the Congregational Meeting.

This Sunday – February 19th
When I was involved in teaching an ethics program in the Canadian Forces, I learned that there are a number of ways that behaviour can be guided.  One way is to create a set of rules that everyone follows.  “Do not kill.” If you follow the rules you are good.  Of course you cannot make a rule to cover every situation.  Another way is to teach a framework on which decisions can be based.  “All life should be respected.”  This method allows some interpretation, and may produce results which are not entirely as expected.  Another method is to have both rules and a framework.  You know the rules, but you also have the resources, the framework on which to make your decisions in the absence of a specific rule.  Jesus seems to have favoured this last way.  There are rules, in the Bible called “commandments.”  But we also find in the Bible a constant refrain from the prophets and from Jesus and the apostles that people are “following the rules,” but still managing to cause hurt, pain and suffering.  In both the reading from Leviticus (a rule book) and from Matthew, we are given examples of behaviour that goes beyond the rules, behaviour that is based on a relationship with God.

The Readings for Sunday are Leviticus 19: 1-2, 9-18 and Matthew 5: 38-48.  We will also be singing a portion of Psalm 119 (v.33-44).  I have called my sermon, “Teach me your way.”

We will also be welcoming three new members by transfer of membership this Sunday.”

 MEN’S BREAKFAST
The Men of Spirit West will be gathering for Breakfast this Saturday, February 18 at 8:00 am in the Lower Hall.  Breakfast is open to any man who wants to come out for a great breakfast.  As a note,  each man usually put in $10 dollars, this covers the breakfast supplies and the surplus is put into a fund that offsets the cost of minor repairs around the church.

Greetings,
Please note the update to the information on the World Day of Prayer planning meeting, and remember that following the service on Sunday we will be holding the Congregational Budget Meeting.  See also the new item about “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

This Sunday – February 12th
Some of you may remember the 1992 movie, A Few Good Men.  One of the most iconic scenes from that movie is the Jack Nicholson character shouting at the Tom Cruise character, “You can’t handle the truth!”  Believe it or not, Paul has a similar opinion of the Christians at Corinth but expresses it in a much “nicer” way.  He says to them, “ I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food.  Even now you are still not ready.”  Paul sees that being a follower of Christ is not a destination but a journey.  Our Christian life is about growing and maturing, an ongoing process that does not and should not stop.  Paul says to the Corinthians that they are not a mature community, that their quarrels and jealousies show that there is more growth needed, and that if they keep at it maturity will come.  In the Gospel reading, which is a continuation of our readings from the Sermon on the Mount,  Jesus has some pointed and difficult statements to make about anger, adultery, divorce and oaths.  Is this solid food that we might not be ready for.  How can we digest it?

The Readings for Sunday are 1 Corinthians 3: 1-9 and Matthew 5: 21-37.  In the Time for All Ages,  I will be talking about how “Be careful with that..!.” If we do not understand or fully appreciate the “tools” we have been given, we can hurt ourselves and others.  I have called my sermon, “Are you ready?”

Greetings,
Happy Ground Hog Day, or Happy Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary and the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, or Happy Candlemas.  If you were at church for Cinnamon Bun Sunday you will have heard that at one time, today marked the end of the Christmas Season and you should take down your Christmas decorations if you have not already done so.  Today is also the second day of the United Nations Interfaith Harmony Week,  and in light of what has happened in our country this past week, it is a time when we really need to think about how we relate to those of other faiths in our troubled world.

This Sunday – February 5th
This Sunday the Gospel readings is again from the “Sermon on the Mount,” an address/sermon given by Jesus early in his ministry in which he outlines the divine vision for “Kingdom of God” and its citizens.  This week’s reading is the familiar passage about being salt and light.  In the passage, Jesus talks about the uselessness of salt that has lost its taste.  It has been pointed out to me that salt losing its taste or saltiness is a chemical impossibility, I may share what some commentators have shared on this point.  But I will focus more on the command to “let your light shine.”  We will also be looking a passage from the prophet Isaiah which almost defines what it means to let your light shine.  I had the honour of being present at the vigil held Monday night at the Alberta Legislature for the victims of the shooting at the Centre Culturel Isalmique de Québec.  It was a candlelight vigil, and even in the wind that blew across the grounds, people tried bravely to keep their candles burning.  Light is the only thing that can push back the darkness.

The Readings for Sunday are Isaiah 58: 1-9a and Matthew 5: 13-20.  In the Time for All Ages,  I will be talking about how “God feeds us.”  I have called my sermon, “Your light shall shine.”

This Sunday will also be a celebration of Holy Communion.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR EMILY LAMONT (Colleen F.’s mother)
The Memorial Service for Emily Lamont will take place at the church tomorrow (Friday, Feb 3) at 11:00 am.
