Greetings,
Please take note of Messy Church this Saturday, and the Congregational Meeting on Sunday after Church and consider the vacant Church Board positions which we hope to fill at that meeting.

This SUNDAY – November 20 – Reign of Christ
We have come to the end of the Christian Year.  This Sunday, Reign of Christ Sunday, is the last Sunday in the Church calendar.  This Sunday was once called Christ the King Sunday, and though the name has changed the emphasis is intended to be on our understanding of Christ as the one “in charge” of our lives.  But this becomes awkward in our current society, where individualism has become an almost religious conviction, with the subsequent view that “no one can tell me what to do.”  We have a strange view of authority.  We tend to want everyone to behave just like we do.  But if my behaviour is the standard by which I judge others, doesn’t that mean that for you your behaviour is the standard, and you will be judging me.  You can see where problems might arise.  But  for the Christian, Christ is supposed to be the standard, the authority.  But can we and do we accept that authority?  How does Christ reign in our lives?
The readings for Sunday are Jeremiah 23: 1-6, and Luke 23: 33-43.  We will also be sharing a Gospel canticle (song) from Luke 1: 68-79.  In the time for all ages I will talk about “the King,” and I have titled the sermon, “Shepherd-King”

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING – This Sunday, November 20 after Church

November 13, 2016 - Pentecost 26 - Rodeo Sunday

Greetings,
Please take note of the invitation below to the Congregational Meeting on November 20 after Church and consider the vacant Church Board positions which we hope to fill at that meeting.

This SUNDAY – November 13 – Rodeo Sunday
One of the uniquely Spirit West traditions is Rodeo Sunday.  This is a Sunday in November that coincides with the presence in Edmonton of the Canadian Finals Rodeo.  This Sunday is that occasion.  The most notable aspect of this tradition is that the music for this Sunday tends to the “ol’ time country” flavour.  The other obvious sign is that members of the congregation are often seen in their western finery.  However, though I will be wearing my cowboy boots, I will not be preaching about cowboys.  The lectionary readings for this Sunday, do however seem appropriately apt to our current world situation. In the gospel reading, Luke presents a very dire picture of what is to come in the world.  It is an “end time” passage.  Now many people are looking at what has been happening in our world; wars, unrest, waves of refugees, Brexit, and the election of Donald Trump as signs that the end of the world is near.  Maybe?  As we have seen, the response of some is to arm themselves to the teeth and hunker down for the apocalypse.  But that is not what Jesus calls us to do in the face of difficulties.
The readings for Sunday are 2 Thessalonians 3: 6-13, and Luke 21: 5-19.  In the time for all ages I will talk about “WorryðTrust,” and I have titled the sermon, “We will stand firm”

November 3, 2016 - Pentecost 25 - Remembrance Sunday with communion

11/3/2016

Greetings,

This SUNDAY – November 6
There is a lot about remembering in November.  The month started with All Saints Day.  It continued on November 2nd with All Souls Day.  You may have heard of this day in Mexico where it is called Dia de Muertos, the Day of the Dead.  On both these days people are called to remember.  First to remember those of the faithful who have gone before us, and then to remember all who have died.  If you live in the UK, you will be called on to “Remember, remember, the fifth of November! The gunpowder treason and plot.” (Guy Fawkes, 1605) We are also coming up to Remembrance Day, another call to remember.  And finally in our own faith community on Sunday we will be celebrating Holy Communion, a sacrament in which Christ says to us, “Do this in remembrance of me.”  All these calls to remember have one thing in common, we are called to remember people and events which for the most part we never actually experienced.  We participate in the remembering by the sharing of stories.  Stories of events, stories of people. Stories that are told in families, in churches, in communities.  We develop our identity through the stories we share.  Our Bible is a collection of stories created by people who wanted to remember their experiences with God, and wanted those who came after them to be able to share in some way in that remembering.
The readings for Sunday are Deuteronomy 4: 9-14, and John 15: 9-13.  In the time for all ages I will talk about “Story Time,” and I have titled the sermon, “In Remembrance”

The Celebration of Life of John Ludlow

The Service to remember and give thanks for the life of John Ludlow will take place tomorrow, Friday, November 4 at 2:00 pm at the Church.
