I’m back!
This Sunday – Canada Sunday
This Sunday we will acknowledge the 152nd Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. I will be referencing two Scripture readings that are not part of the Common Lectionary or my Basis of Union Lectionary. One of the readings is from Psalm 72. The first eight verses of this Psalm have actually had a role in Canadian history, particularly verse 8. Verse 8 reads in part (in the King James Version, the English translation in 1867) “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea.” The seven verses that precede this give a vision of a nation/people ruled with justice and righteousness, a nation where there is defence of the cause of the poor, deliverance to the needy, and a crushing of the oppressor. It is also a place where the mountains yield prosperity for the people. In 1867, there were those who saw this as a vision for this newly established country in what was called, by Europeans, British North America. How have we done in relationship to that vision? Where is there still work to be done?
CHILDREN IN WORSHIP
Although there is no Sunday School during the summer, children are still welcome to be present for worship. To make things a bit easier, Activity Packs are available each Sunday at the Welcome Table.
SOCIAL MEDIA 101 (Social Media for Beginners)
Does the previous paragraph mean anything to you? Are you among those people who hear words like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and SnapChat and think you are hearing a foreign language. When some of your friends ask you to “friend them” are you confused? Do you think you might be missing out when someone you know asks you if you have seen the post on Instagram of a mutual friend’s darling new grandchild? Is sharing what your church is doing beyond Sunday (with pictures), something you might like to do? If this might be you, help and hope is at hand. Aly L. is offering a session on July 14 after the worship service to introduce members of the Sprit West congregation to the possibilities of Social Media. Please signup if you are interested in attending the course or call the church office to register interest.
Your Favourite Hymn
Do you have a favourite hymn that you’d like to hear included in one of our worship services? Please let Bonnie C. know your choice and she will make sure it is sung within the month.
