In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus asks his followers how they would identify him. “Who do you say that I am?” Each of us has an understanding of who Jesus is, and each of our understandings is unique. But the question for each of us, is whether our understanding allows Jesus to “self-identify.” In the Gospel story, the various followers of Jesus repeat what they have heard about Jesus. But Peter has a moment of insight, and reflects not what others are saying about Jesus, but reveals an understanding of Jesus based on his relationship with Jesus. The story from Paul’s letter to the Romans looks at the uniqueness of each person and their gifts and relationship to the church.
The scripture readings are Romans 12: 1-8 and Matthew 16: 13-20. In the Time for All Ages I will be looking at what is “Most Valuable” to God, and the title of the sermon is “Names You Call Me.”
