THIS SUNDAY
In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus asks his followers how they would identify him.  “Who do you say that I am?”  Each of us has an understanding of who Jesus is, and each of our understandings is unique.  But the question for each of us, is whether our understanding allows Jesus to “self-identify.”  In the Gospel story, the various followers of Jesus repeat what they have heard about Jesus.  But Peter has a moment of insight, and reflects not what others are saying about Jesus, but reveals an understanding of Jesus based on his relationship with Jesus.  The story from Paul’s letter to the Romans looks at the uniqueness of each person and their gifts and relationship to the church.
The scripture readings are Romans 12: 1-8 and Matthew 16: 13-20.  In the Time for All Ages I will be looking at what is “Most Valuable” to God,  and the title of the sermon is “Names You Call Me.”

WELCOME BACK SUNDAY – September 10
Sep 10 will be our Welcome Back Sunday.  There will be a program for the children, on Sep 10, there will be a lunch after church, and there will be an opportunity to register your children for Sunday School.  Sunday School “classes” will start on Sunday, Sep 17.  We continue to look for adults who would like to teach or help with Sunday School.  Look for a signup sheet at church.

Ladies Group Welcome Back Social –

We are going to have a dessert party and get to know you social.  We are asking everyone who attends to bring their favorite dessert recipe.  A sign-up sheet we will be available soon.  Our theme for the year is “Recipes” which we will be including at every meeting and sharing them at the end of the year.

THIS SUNDAY
I’m back!  Somehow the lectionary must have known that I was away at an Inter-faith Conference.  The readings for this Sunday point to the challenges of including those who are different.  The story from the Law is about Joseph, the one sold into foreign slavery by his brothers.  He eventually rises to become an important official in the Egyptian government.   Joseph’s family back in Israel are facing starvation in a famine.  They must appeal to the Egyptian government for assistance.  And who’s in charge of distributing such assistance?  In the reading from the Gospel, Jesus is asked for help by a Canaanite mother, a foreigner.  He refuses her on the basis of her nationality and religion.  She calls Jesus on it.
The scripture readings are Genesis 45: 1-15 and Matthew 15: 21-28.  We will also be singing Psalm 133.  In the Time for All Ages I will be looking at “Family Reunions” and the title of the sermon is “Canaanite Lives Matter.”

.
KIDS IN CHURCH (yes please)
Although the Sunday School Program is over until the fall, kids are still part of the church.  Now some kids (and some adults) find sitting for a hour a challenge.  I hope that the Sunday Services during the summer will be varied enough to keep everyone interested.  However, we will also have available Activity Packs at the welcome table.  These maroon cases contain paper, pencils, stickers, puzzles and colouring pages which can be explored either in the sanctuary or the lounge.
(Remember Matthew 19:14, Mark 10: 14 and Luke 18:16)
