Greetings,

SUNDAY, JULY 1ST – CANADA DAY
This year Canada Day falls on a Sunday, and I am using readings that are specific to Canada Day (actually, one reading is associated with Dominion Day, for those who can remember that far back).  Canada is now 151 years old.  One of the readings, from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, speak about maturing in wisdom and understanding.  It is directed to the followers of Christ in Corinth, but could equally apply to any individual, community or nation.   We will be singing part of Psalm 72.  It is from this psalm that the motto on the Canadian coat of arms is derived.  The Gospel reading is Jesus commandment to love one another.  Together they speak to a vision for people or nations of a world of justice and love.

Remember that our Canada Service will be preceded by a Pancake Breakfast starting at 9:00 am. Don D., our breakfast coordinator is looking for a few more volunteers to help set up on Sunday morning.  If you can be at the church by 8:00 am to help out please let Don know (780-455-5537).

 Work-Bee – July 10th
On Tuesday, July 10th at 9:30 am, Carol C. is organizing a work-bee to clean-up the downstairs kitchen and fridges.  This is timely because the Out of School Care group will no longer be renting the space and we hope to attract new renters.  Carol is looking for a group of about 10 people for the morning with snacks provided.

SPIRIT WEST FALL SUPPER- Needs people
The Spirit West Fall Supper (set by the Board for Sunday, Oct. 2)  needs a planning committee.  Three people have offered to serve on the committee, but so far there is no chair.  So the Fall Dinner committee requires a chair (and other committee members would be great too).

SECURITY ACCESS CODES
For those of you who regularly access the church after office hours, (choir, ladies’ group, men’s breakfast, hospitality etc.) please ensure that you are using an access code for the alarm system that you have been given by Norma since April.  The old access code (1234) is no longer a valid code.  If you use it the system will flag you as an intruder, our security service will be notified, people will be called to investigate, and the police may come.  Make sure you are using a current code!

 OUTREACH AT SPIRIT WEST
Seasonal items are being collected for the Jasper Place Wellness Centre and the Bissell Centre.  We are looking for hats, sun glasses, refillable water bottles and bug spray.  These can be left at the Giving Tree by the lounge windows

A NEW WAY TO CONTRIBUTE FINANCIALLY
You don’t have offering envelopes, you are not on PAR, and you don’t get to church as often as you would like, but you want to make a financial contribution to work of Spirit West, and receive a tax receipt.  Now you can!  Check out the online donation option on our website spiritwest.org and click on the Donate tab in the navigation bar.   It was suggested at a Board Meeting that everyone give the donate button a try (just to make sure it works, of course)

 RIDE  TO CHURCH?
From time to time we encounter people who would like to come to church at Spirit West, but are unable to because they do not have means of transportation.  Can you give a ride? If you would be willing to make yourself available to provide a ride to church please call the church office.  Do you need a ride? Would you like to come to church at Spirit West, but are unable to because you have no ride, please call the church office. (780-481-1406)

Greetings,
Today is National Aboriginal Day.  In light of the difficult relationship that the Church has with First Nations let each of us take a moment to pray.  Let us pray for those who are involved in healing and restoring the brokenness in and with our First Nations, may the healing continue.  Let us pray for those still suffering from the effects of the Residential Schools, may they reach a place of healing.  Let us pray for those who continue to view “the other” as the problem. May we all recognize in each other the face of God’s creation and work toward reconciliation.

This Sunday
Summer has begun.  But if you have noticed the church sign, you might suspect some dire future.  The Gospel reading for Sunday relates the episode of Christ calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee which has terrified the disciples and threatened to sink their boat.  Jesus is in the boat with them, asleep on a cushion in the stern.  The disciples have to wake him up to point out the storm and the impending danger.  Jesus calms the storm, but not until he has chastised the disciples for their lack of faith.  Now most of us have experienced “storms of life.”  For some those storms have been very severe.  And I think that many of us would be in the same boat (pun intended) as the disciples, deeply concerned about the possibility of drowning.  We will look at the Gospel and see what good news there is for us as we face the storms of life.

The Scripture readings are from the Prophets: 1 Samuel 17:57 – 18:5, 10-16  and from the Gospels: Mark 4: 35-41.  During the Time for All Ages I will be looking at what we can do after we say “I’m scared.” The sermon title is “A Storm is Coming.”

HOLISTIC END OF LIFE PLANNING WORKSHOP
This workshop is going to be held on Tuesday, June 26th in the lounge at the Church from 1 – 4 pm.
The presenter, Tony White, is going to look at the practical, emotional and spiritual matters that are associated with death and dying.  He himself has suffered at least two near death experiences, such that he decided to train as a public speaker and present his learnings
The cost is $30.00 per person for the 3 hour workshop and a preparation tool kit.  If the cost is a concern, then Tony is open to negotiation – he told me that he was more interested in getting his message out.
If you are interested please speak to Bob or Sheila H.; or phone them (780-460-3878); or just show up on Tuesday, June 26th at 1:00 pm

Greetings,

This Sunday
This  Sunday is also a bit busy. Next Thursday, June 21 is National Aboriginal Day, and the United Church and other Canadian churches have designated the Sunday before this day as Aboriginal Sunday.  Some of the hymns and prayers during the service on Sunday will reflect the gifts of First Nations communities, as the church continues to find ways “to reconcile and make new” the brokenness between “all our relations (Akwe nia’tetewá:neren)”  .  We will also be honouring our Fathers and the men who have been role models in our lives (hint: this will involve chocolate).   With the readings we will be looking at the vision of a new creation in Christ.

The Scripture readings are from the Letters: 2 Corinthians 5: 6-10, 14-17  and from the Gospels: Mark 4: 26-34.  During the Time for All Ages I will be looking at “do-overs.” The sermon title is “A New Creation.”

THE Garage Sale IS ON NOW!
The Sale is on now and continues tomorrow.  Come out for great bargains on some very nice items.

Greetings,

This Sunday
There is a lot going on this Sunday. At the heart of it is our regular Sunday service.  A confirmation resource booklet that was used by my father when he joined the United Church in the 1950s describes the Sunday worship service as a your weekly appointment with the divine, not lightly to be missed.  At this Sunday service we will be looking at leadership and power, and what those concepts mean or should mean in the Church. The Scripture readings are 1 Samuel 8: 4-11, 16-20 and Mark 5: 20-35   The title of the sermon is “We have the power!”

During the Time for All Ages on Sunday we will be honouring the work of the Sunday School as our regular Sunday School classes come to an end for the season.  If you, or members of you family, have been part of the Sunday School during the past year as teachers or as students please join us on Sunday.  And after the service we will be joining together for a BBQ.  There will be lots of food and games.  The weather forecast looks a bit iffy for Sunday, but we hope that the BBQ can be outside. So, be optimistic and bring your lawn chairs!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA
Sunday is also the 93rd Anniversary of the formation of the United Church of Canada.  Our denomination came in to being on June 10th, 1925 at the Mutual Street Arena in Toronto.  The Methodist Church in Canada, the churches of the Congregation Union, the Local Union churches of Western Canada and two thirds of the Presbyterian Church in Canada came together to establish a new Christian community called the United Church of Canada.
At the BBQ after church on Sunday there will be cake!

Garage Sale – June 14 & 15
While you are spring cleaning, please save household goods, toys, books, tools, etc. for our Annual Garage Sale.  Donations are now being accepted at the church.  The income from the sale of donated items goes to the church. You can also rent a table for your own sales, with the rental fee going to the church. Call the church office for information.  WE REALLY NEED VOLUNTEERS ON TUESDAY TO HELP SET OUT AND PRICE THE DONATED ITEMS.  WE ALSO NEED PEOPLE TO HELP OUT DURING THE SALE FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON ON. Check the Sign-up sheets at the Church or call the Church office.
