Sunday, February 27, 2022 – Transfiguration Sunday

Where do we experience the holy? How do we open ourselves to the mystery and wonder of God?

These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday in the Season after Epiphany. We remember when the first disciples of Jesus were given a glimpse of the glory of God, an encounter with the holy.

•        From the Torah: Exodus 34:29-35 (Moses and the Tablets of the Covenant)
The Book of Exodus is the story of the people of Israel being led out of slavery in Egypt to be restored to the Promised Land, some 15 centuries before Jesus. The focal point of the book is the covenant God makes with the people at Mount Sinai. Today’s reading describes how, after receiving the Ten Commandments, Moses is physically changed by his encounter with the holy.

•        From the Gospels: Luke 9:28-36 (The Transfiguration of Jesus)
The Transfiguration takes place on a mountain in Galilee, just after Jesus predicts his suffering and death for the first time. From here, Jesus proceeds towards Jerusalem, and the crucifixion.

On the mountaintop, three disciples see Jesus conversing with Moses and Elijah. In Hebrew tradition, Moses represents the Law, and Elijah is the forerunner of the Messiah.

If you have time, read some of the context before and after, but particularly verses 37 to 43.

Sunday, February 20, 2022 – The Seventh Sunday after Epiphany
How do we use the gifts God gives us?

These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for the Seventh Sunday after Epiphany. The word “epiphany” means “revelation” or “manifestation.” The scripture readings for this Season after Epiphany focus on how God is being revealed in the world.

•        From the Torah: Genesis 45:3-15 (Joseph and his brothers)
This reading is a short excerpt from the later part of the story of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers. (Suggestion: read the full story of Joseph, in Genesis 35 to 50.) When famine strikes, the hungry brothers come begging for food from Joseph, who has been placed in charge of the famine relief project. After testing his brothers to see if they have changed, Joseph reveals his identity to them.

•        From the Gospels: Luke 6:27-38 (Love your enemies)
This reading from Luke’s Gospel continues the Sermon on the Plain, Luke’s version of the Beatitudes. These teachings of Jesus provide a contrast to the teachings of the scribes and Pharisees. The latter group taught people to keep pure by not associating with the unclean; Jesus taught them to love their enemies. The word translated as “love” (agapé) means self-giving, sacrificial love.

Both passages are about true forgiveness. Forgiveness, whether offered or received, provides an opportunity to change, to break the cycle of violence and revenge. Turning to God as we struggle with pain and rage is our way out of the pit.

Looking Ahead
The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on March 2 this year. A calendar of daily readings, along with suggestions for spiritual exercises and devotions, will be sent out by email on February 24. If you would rather pick up a printed version, or have one mailed out, please contact Norma in the Church Office before that date.

Sunday, February 13, 2022 – The Sixth Sunday after Epiphany
How might God’s blessings bring God’s reign into the world now? How do we bear the fruit of God’s blessings?

These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany. The word “epiphany” means “revelation” or “manifestation.” The scripture readings for this Season after Epiphany focus on how God is being revealed in the world.

•        From the Prophets:  Jeremiah 17:5-10 (Blessed are those who trust in God)
Jeremiah brought his message from God to the people of the southern kingdom of Judah, around the time of the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC. After the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, most of the able-bodied people were taken away into exile in Babylon. It was a time of turmoil and upheaval on all levels,– social, political, economic, and theological.

•        From the Gospels: Luke 6:17-26 (Blessings and woes)
This week’s reading from Luke’s Gospel will remind us of the Beatitudes, from the Sermon on the Mount, in chapters 5 to 7 of Matthew’s Gospel. However, in Luke, the setting is a “level place” (Lk. 6:17). Luke’s version includes a list of woes, in contrast to the blessings.

Desert people can really hear the metaphor in verses Jeremiah 17:7-8. The tree planted by the water bearing good fruit is a repeated image in the Bible (see Psalm 1), with good reason. Water is a scarce commodity in the Middle East. Desert dwellers,– animals, people and plants,– need to know where the water is, and how to hold onto that water to survive until the next rain or the next trip to the well. Humans can live without food for weeks, but only two or three days without water. How does this image inform our faith today?
General Council

This year, the 44th meeting of the General Council of The United Church of Canada (GC44) will take place fully online, commencing on February 13 and ending in August (with breaks!). The meeting will elect the next Moderator on July 22. To follow what’s happening with the 44th General Council, check out https://generalcouncil44.ca/ or  #mod43prayer #gc44 #uccan.
