Greetings,
THIS SUNDAY
Our readings for Sunday, the Seventh Sunday of Easter, point to the challenges faced by the early followers of Jesus, and faced by us today.  The reading from the Acts of the Apostles records Jesus’ ascension, his return to God. Jesus has been the one to keep the followers together.  They now appear to be left on their own, with the promise of the Holy Spirit. The passage from John’s Gospel records some of Jesus’ final comments to his followers.  Jesus prays for the unity of his followers.  But what does unity look like.  If we look at a mosaic, we see that it is composed of thousands of different pieces, no two are exactly the same.  Yet together they create a picture, an image that would be impossible if all the pieces were the same.  The last verse of the passage from John is the source of the motto (in Latin) of the United Church of Canada.
The scripture readings for Sunday are Act 1: 6-14 and John 17: 1-11.  In the Time for All Ages, I will be talking about, “A Little Rock.”  The sermon is titled, “Christ is our Unity”

GENERAL COUNCIL REMITS 3 & 4- Congregational Meeting
Remits 3 and 4 (Funding a New Model and Office of Vocations) will be dealt with at a Congregational Meeting to be held on Sunday, May 28 immediately following the service.  The responses to Remits 3 and 4 must be in to the General Council office by June 30, 2017.  Remit 6, the one remaining congregational remit,  must be voted on by February 2018 so it will be dealt with at a later date. (There are also Remits 5, 7 and 8, but they are only dealt with by Presbyteries and not congregations.) Katherine Moore, a Commissioner to General Council 42 will be present at this meeting to assist us in understanding the issues raised by the remits. In preparation for this meeting, please read the information about the Remits which can be found online at gc42.ca/remits.

EXTREME HUNGER APPEAL – United Church of Canda
The United Church of Canada is launching an Extreme Hunger Appeal as the humanitarian crisis in Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen reaches grave levels.

Starvation and extreme hunger are rapidly reaching a scale the world has not seen before in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen. There is also extreme hunger, malnutrition, and starvation in Kenya. Vulnerable people are most impacted, including children.

Small-scale farmers supply the majority of food in Africa. But climate change has created a devastating and prolonged drought, resulting in both water and food shortages. Farmers are unable to grow crops and their livestock have died. Ongoing conflict is also contributing to the crisis as many families are forced to flee their homes, farms, and livelihoods.

The people of Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Kenya urgently need your help. All donations raised for this appeal will go to our long-term Mission & Service partners, including ACT Alliance, which is saving lives in the region.

May 18, 2017 - Sixth Sunday after Easter

Greetings,
THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday is the sixth Sunday in the Easter Season.  One of the Scripture readings is from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, the story of the growth and challenges of the early Christian community.  In Sunday’s passage Paul is talking to the people of Athens and says: “God made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted their times of existence, and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him – though indeed he is not far from each one of us.”  What an image, all humanity is to grope for God.  Apparently, none of us has all the answers.  And our search is described as groping, reaching out with limited vision to encounter on who is not far from each of us.
The scripture readings for Sunday are Act 17 :22-31 and John 14: 15-21.  We will also be singing part of Psalm 66.  In the Time for All Ages, I will be asking, “How Big is God.”  The sermon is titled, “Groping for God”

SPIRIT WEST SPRING PLANT SALE – May 19 and 20
Our annual Spring Plant Sale starts tomorrow Friday, May 19 from 11 to 7 and continues on Saturday, May 20 from 9 to 5:30.  We will have a selection of bedding plants, herbs, beautiful hanging baskets, and patio pots.  Many volunteers will be needed for set up, sales and clean up, and for the men’s hot dog BBQ.  Sign up on the volunteer sheet on the credenza outside the office.  Also, talk to your neighbours, friends and co-workers and invite them to come buy plants from us!

MEN’S BREAKFAST – May 20
The Men of Spirit West will on Saturday, May 20 at 8:00 am in the Lower Hall.  Breakfast is open to any man who wants to come out for a great breakfast.  As a note,  each man usually put in $10 dollars, this covers the breakfast supplies and the surplus is put into a fund that offsets the cost of minor repairs around the church. This Saturday’s Breakfast will be followed by the set-up of the Plant Sale BBQ.

GENERAL COUNCIL REMITS 3 & 4- Congregational Meeting
Remits 3 and 4 (Funding a New Model and Office of Vocations) will be dealt with at a Congregational Meeting to be held on Sunday, May 28 immediately following the service.  The responses to Remits 3 and 4 must be in to the General Council office by June 2017.  Remit 6, the one remaining congregational remit,  must be voted on by February 2018 so it will be dealt with at a later date. Greetings,
THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday is the fifth Sunday in the Easter Season.  It is also Mothers’ Day, and in the United Church it has been called Christian Family Sunday for a number of years.  During the service we will be honouring the women of the church, our mothers and our mothers in faith.  The focus of the scripture readings, particularly the reading from the reading from the 1st Letter of Peter, point to the necessity of a firm foundation for our faith and for our lives.  What is the foundation on which we have constructed who we are?  In a number of place, the human person is described as a temple.  Upon what is this temple built?
The scripture readings for Sunday are 1 Peter 2: 2-10 and John 14: 1-14.  In the Time for All Ages, I talk about, “Like a Rock.”  The sermon is titled, “A Firm Foundation”

May 4, 2017 - Fourth Sunday after Easter with communion

5/4/2017

Picture

Greetings,
May the 4th be with you (sorry, couldn’t resist).

THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday is the fourth Sunday in the Easter Season.  Sunday’s lectionary readings point in two directions.  The reading from Acts tells us of the developments that are happening within the community of “believers.”  One particular mark of the community which often goes unnoticed, or perhaps ignored comes in Acts 2:45, “they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need.”  That is certainly commitment.  It reminds me a bit of the answer to the question that is asked about the difference between the chicken and the pig in a bacon-and-eggs breakfast. The chicken is involved, the pig is committed.  The gospel reading and the Psalm point to the image of Jesus as the good shepherd. And there is a lot more to this image than the Sunday School picture of the glowing white Jesus with the fluffy lambs in the flowery meadow.
The scripture readings for Sunday are Acts 2: 42-47 and John 10: 1-10.  In the Time for All Ages, I talk about, “Sharing”  The sermon is titled, “The Good Shepherd”
We will be celebrating Holy Communion at this Service.

SPIRIT WEST SPRING CONCERT – Abundant Love
Come out tomorrow night (Friday, May 5, at 7:00 pm) and enjoy an evening of music that focuses on the Abundant Love of God.  Immerse yourself in the rich sounds of the piano, the flute, the harps, the setar, the drums and the human voice raised in song.  There is no charge for the Concert, but free will offerings will be accepted and used to help those in need in the West End.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR BRIAN WATTS
It is with regret that we share with you the news of the passing of Brian Watts of our congregation.  There will be a Celebration of Brian’s Life at Spirit West on Saturday (May 6) at 3:00 pm.  Please keep Kathy and their sons Brennan and Jeff in your prayers.

BEATITUDES BIBLE STUDY in two Sessions
The final session of the second edition of the Beatitudes Study will be on Wednesday, May 10.  We will start at 1:30 pm.  This is a fascinating study of the Beatitudes from Matthew 5:1-12.  The video presenter, Dr. Kenneth Bailey, offers unique insights into this familiar passage, and in many ways challenges what we think we know.

SPIRIT WEST SPRING PLANT SALE – May 19 and 20
Keep on the lookout here for details of Spring Plant Sale, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20.  We will be needing people to volunteer to help set up and clean up.  We are also looking for people who would like to take a shift or two as our “sales associates.”

PRAYER CIRCLE
There is now a Spirit West Prayer Circle.  We gather at the church on Thursday mornings at 10:30. We share a reading, share our stories, and pray.   There is no “sign-up” for this, just come as you feel the need.  If you are interested, join us on Thursdays.

CALL FOR WITNESSES FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
The Living Into Right Relations Committee of Alberta and Northwest Conference has invited each pastoral charge to appoint and support two people who will act as facilitators and witnesses for the ongoing work of truth and reconciliation in our local communities across Alberta, Northeastern British Columbia, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. The role of these facilitators is to help our congregations and other ministries to keep moving forward in right relations. Witnesses in the Bible and Indigenous culture play a key role in helping us to remember what happened and to share the truth as they heard it with succeeding generations.

On the weekend of May 5, 6 & 7, 2017 at Kasota East Camp near Red Deer, we will be inviting all appointed witnesses and our committee members to meet one another; and to support, educate and share resources for the right relations journey we are all on.  Therefore we encourage you to consider this request and send names and contact information as soon as possible to Norma at the Church Office  to be forwarded to the Conference Office.
