Happy Thursday!
This Sunday – Basis of Union: Article XVIII – Of Church Order and Fellowship
For the next three Sundays I will be finishing my Basis of Union Lectionary Series. This Sunday we will be looking at Article XVIII (18) – Of Church Order and Fellowship. This article speaks to the church as it lives out its faith as a visible human community. It speaks of the necessity of a structure of governance with people set apart for that work. But for me, an important part of this article is the line which reads: “although the visible Church may contain unworthy members and is liable to err, yet believers ought not lightly to separate themselves from its communion,” There it is, in our foundational statement of faith, the church is not perfect, the community and its members make mistakes. Unfortunately this is also one of the reasons people give for not going to church, the people they find there are not perfect. But will absence make the church better?
The Scripture readings for Sunday are Ephesians 4:1-16 and John 17: 18-25. In the Time for All Ages I will talk about being “Part of the Family.” The Sermon takes its title from the Basis of Union Article.
This Sunday we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
