Sunday, March 13, 2022 – The Second Sunday in Lent
Who or what helps you stand firm in faith? How do you respond to God’s tender promise of unending love, and God’s strong call to a deeper purpose?
These are the readings we will hear in this week’s worship service, for the Second Sunday in the Season of Lent.
The Season of Lent is intended to be a time of solemn reflection, repentance and preparation building up to the celebration of resurrection on Easter morning. The season consists of the 40 days before Easter, excluding Sundays, which are meant to be rest stops (think “oasis”) in the wilderness. How will you prepare yourself for the celebration of Resurrection? How can you deepen your faith life this Lent?
• From the Torah: Genesis 15:1-6 (God makes a covenant)
The Book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible, recounting the early history of the people of Israel. Preceding today’s passage, God promises many descendants to Abram [pronounced
ĀY ¬brum] and Sarai [pronounced SAH rye], who are later renamed Abraham and Sarah.
• From the Gospels: Luke 13:31-35 (Words of rejection and lament)
The Herod in today’s Gospel reading is Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great (c. 72 to c. 4 BCE), who was in power at the time of Jesus’ birth. Both had reputations as ruthless rulers. Earlier in Luke’s Gospel, Herod Antipas had John the Baptist beheaded.
In today’s reading, Jesus calls Herod a fox. This term could mean a sly person, but in the culture of the day, it more often meant an insignificant person. The closing verses foreshadow the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
The readings remind us that there is both promise and challenge in following God’s ways. In the face of the temptation to give up the journey in despair, our trust in God’s strong and tender care for us is a source of hope and strength.

Lenten Ponderings
Remind yourself of the cycles and order of the earth by looking for the birds, animals and flowers that herald the turning year.
Visit a park or the countryside often, to reflect on the perennial dance of time.
ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
Our annual meeting will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, March 16 via ZOOM. At this meeting, we will review the 2021 Annual Report which was sent to you via email on March 1. There are a few copies of the report at the church. I will send out the ZOOM invitation on March 15. I hope you can attend.
JASPER PLACE WELLNESS BAGGED LUNCH - 26 March
Greetings! I need a crew of about 4 volunteers to help put together sandwiches and assemble bagged lunches (24) for the JP Wellness Centre. Once made the bagged lunches will be delivered for that evenings Winter Warming Meal. Please contact Lori W at 780-221-7729 if you are interested.
SPIRIT WEST PRAYER CHAIN
Prayer is important. We know that people still face challenges and difficulties not related to Covid-19, and we cannot forget them. Our Prayer Chain continues to be active. If you have a prayer request, please send it to spiritwest.prayerchain@gmail.com. These requests will be shared regularly with the prayer chain and may form part of the Prayers of the People in our Sunday Worship.
Please remember to have people removed from the prayer chain if the prayers are no longer needed.
YOUR BOTTLES FOR THE CHURCH
You may have bottles piling up for recycling. You can bring them to the church (or you can call for pick up). If you want to bring your bottles (and any other recyclable beverage containers) in during our office hours and put them directly in the Bottle Shed (by the garage), give us a call, and we can have the shed open for you. All money raised from the return of bottles goes towards paying down the principal and interest on our mortgage.
