This Sunday – the Fourth Sunday in Creation Time: World Communion
I will be away this Sunday with my son, Paul, at the annual Alberta DeMolay Convention being held this year in Cold Lake. Leading worship will be the Rev. Stuart Jackson. Stuart is well known in the Edmonton area, having served a number of churches, as well as Edmonton Presbytery. Stuart is recently retired, but has agreed to share his wit and wisdom with us this Sunday. During the service we will be marking the Full Communion agreement between the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Canada.
The Scripture readings are Lamentations 3:19-26, 2 Timothy 1:1-14 and Luke 17:5-10. The title of the sermon is “Hope in Exile”
This is World Communion Sunday, when we gather at Christ’s Table with those churches of the reformed tradition around the world. These are Christian churches that do not celebrate communion daily or weekly, but have agreed to gather for this sacrament on the first Sunday in October.
TRADITIONAL FALL SUPPER with SILENT AUCTION - Sunday, October 27
The planning for the Supper is well underway, the menu is a traditional turkey dinner with vegetables, salads and desserts.
We are looking for someone who will coordinate the silent auction. We will also need volunteers who will be ready to help make the event happen. Please contact Larry at the church office. For those who wish to solicit local businesses for items for the Silent Auction, letters of introduction are available. There are also posters which we encourage you to take and post on a community billboard near you.
TEACHERS FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL 2019-2020 (some dates, and I missed on last week)
We are still looking for adults who would teach Sunday School on one or more of the following dates: Oct 20, Nov 3, Nov 17and Nov 24. When these four dates are looked after, we will have a Sunday School program every Sunday until the new year. The signup sheet is available at the back of the church.
COMMUNION SERVERS
At Spirit West we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion, (or the Lord’s Supper, or the Eucharist) once a month, normally on the first Sunday. Serving communion involves the minister and at least three people from the congregation who assist. We are seeking out those who would like to be Communion Servers. This is not a perpetual commitment. Glenna W. has made up a schedule for the next twelve months (i.e twelve services). You will find it with the other sign-up sheets by the office. You can pick which date(s) you would like to be part of serving team. If you have any questions about the role of a Communion Server, speak to Larry or Glenna.
